To preserve what is left of the community's values, the new leader of The Plots, Joale, isolates her people from the off-worlders and any who have been exposed to their ideas, including Kelsey. The Plots, shaped by the values of cooperation and sharing, turns its back on its own people in an effort to preserve the old ways. Seeking to find a place for herself in this changed world, Kelsey finds herself in conflict with the very people she came back to help.
